A bold reinvention for Cage the Elephant, the Dan Auerbach-produced Tell Me I’m Pretty boasts a wonderfully fragile blend of twee-informed jangle, baroque pop and folk-rock. Most of the cuts are suffused with a lonely, moody vibe. On “Cold Cold Cold” singer Matt Shultz chants, “Doctor, can you help me because something don’t feel right.” On “Trouble” the frontman reveals even more: “Got so much to lose. Got so much to prove. God, don’t let me lose my mind.” His creeping unease certainly helps explain the record’s muted atmosphere and wistful textures. This is Cage the Elephant at their most wounded and exposed.
