"He's a good friend, swinging artist, and one of the nicest people I know," says Sammy Davis, Jr. as he introduces Sam Cooke to a 1964 Copacabana audience. The New York supper club was a key arbiter of early '60s pop, and you can hear the soul legend brimming with enthusiasm as he woos the cabaret crowd. Cooke's in fine form, but he nearly overlooks his vaunted catalog as he proves his knowledge of the American songbook. It's frustrating to hear "You Send Me" reduced to a minute-long medley, even as he adds verve to sing-alongs like "This Little Light of Mine" and "If I Had a Hammer."
