The Kills

After a five year break in activity, Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart return with an album that’s bigger and busier, even verging on chaotic at times. Drawing on influences as diverse as dancehall, gospel and club music, the songs aren’t composed so much as built up in layers, like heavily textured paintings. A meditation on sexual addiction, “Hard Habit to Break” pivots on a frenetic, trashcan breakbeat and a guitar squall from Hince that’s jagged and blistering. “Doing It to Death” -- on which The Kills boldly crossbreed bluesy garage rock and post-dubstep -- is just as carnal. Mosshart delivers one her best vocals: tough yet sensitive and gorgeously damaged. Though the duo’s trusted drum machine pops up here and there, they rely heavily on live drums. It’s a move that lends some extra muscle to slinky groovers like “Siberian Nights” and “Black Tar.”
